How Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid Work

Penicillin kills bacteria by binding its beta-lactam ring to transpeptidase, the enzyme that makes up the bacterial cell wall, preventing cell wall formation. Without a cell wall, the bacterial cell is vulnerable to external water and molecular stress, leading to bacterial death.

Amoxicillin is similar to penicillin in its bactericidal action.

Clavulanic acid belongs to a class of drugs called beta-lactamase inhibitors, an enzyme produced by bacteria to destroy certain antibiotics. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying amoxicillin.

Medical Uses of Glucophage 1g Tablets

Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is used in adults and children to treat the following types of infections:

Middle ear and sinus infections

Respiratory tract infections

Urinary tract infections

Skin and soft tissue infections, including dental infections

Bone and joint infections

How to Use Glucophage 1g Tablets

Always take this medication exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Take this medication with food.

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.

Space the doses evenly apart during the day, at least 4 hours apart. Do not take two doses within one hour.

Do not take amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for more than two weeks.

Children aged 6 years and younger should preferably be treated with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid oral suspension or effervescent sachets, as tablets are not suitable for children weighing less than 25 kg.

For adults and children weighing more than 40 kg, the usual dose is one tablet every 8 hours or one tablet every 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection.

Doses may be changed in special circumstances, so always follow the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.

If you take more medicine than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital immediately.

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose.

Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for a missed dose.
