Alas Purwo is the second release from Ijen Scent, an artisanal Indonesian house, named after the Alas Purwo forest in East Java — one of the oldest and most mythologised rainforests in the archipelago. Released in 2025, it is a unisex fragrance built in small batches from selected natural materials.

It opens bright and citrusy, with genuinely natural-smelling blossoms unfolding underneath. Galbanum and long pepper then push through the heart with a green, resinous edge — the smell of forest air after rain. The dry-down settles into a refined woody-animalic base that layers three ouds — Indonesian, Borneo and Papua — over ambergris and castoreum.

Despite three ouds and castoreum in the base, Alas Purwo never turns heavy. The animalic side stays soft and skin-close rather than loud, which makes it one of the more wearable niche oud fragrances — even for people who usually avoid oud.

Fragrance notes

• Top: citrus notes, blossoms.
• Heart: blossoms, galbanum, long pepper.
• Base: Indonesian oud, Borneo oud, Papua oud, ambergris, castoreum.

How it wears

Fruity-woody with true natural florals. Citrusy at first, then green and peppery, drying down warm, woody and lightly animalic. It develops gradually and stays close to the skin — present, but never overpowering.

How to apply

Spray on clean pulse points — neck, behind the ears and wrists. For better longevity, apply to moisturised skin and avoid rubbing, which disturbs the development of the notes.
