Product description
What is Eletriptan and what are its indications: Eletriptan is one of a group of medicines called serotonin receptor agonists. Serotonin is a natural substance found in the brain that helps constrict blood vessels. Eletriptan can be used to treat migraine with or without aura in adults. Before the migraine, you may go through a phase called the aura, which can include disturbances in vision, numbness, and speech disturbances.
What you need to know before using Eletriptan: Do not use Eletriptan if: you are allergic (severe allergy) to eletriptan, or any other ingredients of this medicine; you have severe liver or kidney disease; you have moderate to severe high blood pressure or untreated mild high blood pressure; you have heart problems, for example, heart attack, angina, heart failure, or irregular heartbeat, or temporary and sudden narrowing of a coronary artery; you have poor circulation (peripheral vascular disease); you have had a stroke (even a minor stroke lasting a few minutes or hours); you have taken ergotamine or medicines like ergotamine (including methysergide) within 24 hours before or after taking eletriptan; you are taking any other medicines ending with "triptan" (for example, sumatriptan, rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, almotriptan, frovatriptan).
Precautions and warnings: Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking eletriptan if: you have diabetes; you smoke or use nicotine replacement therapy; you are male and over 40 years old; you are female and postmenopausal; you or any family member have coronary artery disease; you have been told you may be at higher risk of heart disease, discuss this with your doctor before using eletriptan.
Repeated use of migraine medicines: If you use eletriptan frequently or any medicines for migraine over several days or weeks, it may cause a long-lasting daily headache. Inform your doctor if this happens, as you may need to stop treatment for a while.
Other medicines and eletriptan: Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Taking eletriptan with certain medicines can cause serious side effects. Do not use eletriptan if: you have taken ergotamine or similar medicines within 24 hours before or after eletriptan; you are taking any other medicines ending with "triptan". Some medicines can affect how eletriptan works, or may reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time, including: antifungal medicines (like ketoconazole, itraconazole); antibiotics (like erythromycin, clarithromycin, josamycin); HIV and AIDS medicines (like ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir). Do not take St. John's Wort herbal supplement at the same time as this medicine. If you are already taking St. John's Wort, consult your doctor before stopping it.
Tell your doctor before starting treatment with eletriptan if you are taking some medicines (usually called SSRIs or SNRIs) for depression and other mental disorders. These medicines may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when used together with some migraine medicines (see section 4. Possible side effects).
How to use eletriptan: Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. Adults: You can take your medicine at any time after the start of a migraine attack, but it is best to take it as soon as possible. However, you should only take eletriptan during the headache phase of the migraine. Do not take this medicine to prevent a migraine attack. The usual starting dose is one 40 mg tablet. Swallow each tablet whole with water. If the first tablet does not relieve the migraine, do not take a second tablet for the same attack. If the migraine eases after the first tablet but then returns, you can take another tablet. However, after the first tablet, wait at least two hours before taking the second. Do not take more than 80 mg (2 × 40 mg) in 24 hours. If you find that a 40 mg tablet does not relieve the migraine, tell your doctor — they may decide to increase the dose to two 40 mg tablets for future attacks.

Elderly: The use of eletriptan tablets is not recommended for patients over 65 years old.
