Sefixim 400 mg Capsule What is Sefixim and what are its indications? Sefixim is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic active orally, characterized by bactericidal activity in the laboratory against a wide range of organisms, both gram-positive and gram-negative. It is used to treat the following acute infections when caused by sensitive microorganisms: - Upper respiratory tract infections: for example, otitis media where the causative organism is known or suspected to be resistant to other commonly used antibiotics, or where treatment failure may involve significant risks. - Lower respiratory tract infections: for example, bronchitis. - Urinary tract infections such as cystitis, cystitis and urethritis, pyelonephritis without complications. Precautions and warnings - Dose adjustment is necessary according to the degree of renal impairment. - Sefixim can predispose to the risk of encephalopathy (which may include seizures, confusion, decreased consciousness, and movement disorders), especially in case of overdose or renal impairment. - Sefixim may cause acute kidney failure. - A false positive glucose test in urine may occur with Benedict or Fehling solutions or copper sulfate test strips, but not with glucose oxidase-based tests. - A false positive direct Coombs test has been reported during treatment with cephalosporin antibiotics, so it should be recognized that a positive Coombs test may be due to the medication.
