Product description

Trade name: Cefixime 400 mg Scientific name: Cefixime Nature of the product: Oral medication What is Cefixime and what are its indications for use? Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic active orally, characterized by bactericidal activity in the laboratory against a wide range of organisms, both gram-positive and gram-negative. It is used to treat the following acute infections caused by sensitive microorganisms: - Upper respiratory tract infections: for example, otitis media where the causative organism is known or suspected to be resistant to other commonly used antibiotics, or where treatment failure may involve significant risks. - Lower respiratory tract infections: for example, bronchitis. - Urinary tract infections such as cystitis, cystitis and urethritis, uncomplicated pyelonephritis. What you need to know before using Cefixime Do not use Cefixime if you are allergic to the active ingredients or any other components of this medication, or any other cephalosporin or penicillin drugs. Precautions and warnings - Dose should be adjusted according to the degree of renal impairment. - Cefixime can predispose to the risk of encephalopathy (which may include seizures, confusion, decreased consciousness, and movement disorders), especially in cases of overdose or renal impairment. - Cefixime may cause acute renal failure. - A false positive result for glucose in urine may occur with Benedict’s or Fehling’s solutions or with copper sulfate test strips, but not with glucose oxidase-based tests. - A false positive direct Coombs test has been reported during treatment with cephalosporin antibiotics, so it should be known that a positive Coombs test may be due to the medication. Other medications and Cefixime - Regular monitoring of prothrombin time is required if Cefixime is combined with warfarin. How to use Cefixime - Cefixime is taken orally. - The usual course of treatment is 7 days. It may extend up to 14 days if necessary. - Dosage: - Adults and children over 10 years or weighing more than 50 kg: The recommended dose for adults is 200-400 mg daily depending on the severity of the infection, given either as a single dose or divided into two doses. - Elderly: Elderly patients can be given the same recommended dose as adults. Kidney function should be assessed, and dose adjustment is necessary in cases of severe renal impairment. - Children under 10 years: Cefixime 200 mg tablets are not recommended for children under 10 years. The safety and efficacy of Cefixime in children under 6 months have not been established.
