Product description
What is Eletriptan and what are its indications for use: Eletriptan is one of a group of medicines called serotonin receptor agonists. Serotonin is a natural substance found in the brain that helps constrict blood vessels. Eletriptan can be used to treat migraine with or without aura in adults. Before a migraine, you may go through a phase called the aura, which can include disturbances in vision, numbness, and speech disturbances.
What you need to know before using Eletriptan: Do not use Eletriptan: If you are allergic (severely sensitive) to Eletriptan or any other ingredients of this medicine. If you have severe liver or kidney disease. If you have moderate to severe high blood pressure or untreated mild high blood pressure. If you have heart problems, for example, heart attack, angina, heart failure, or arrhythmia, or a temporary and sudden narrowing of a coronary artery. If you have poor circulation (peripheral vascular disease). If you have had a stroke (even a minor stroke lasting a few minutes or hours). If you have taken ergotamine or medicines like ergotamine (including methysergide) within 24 hours before or after taking Eletriptan. If you are taking any other medicines ending with "triptan" (for example, sumatriptan, rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, almotriptan, frovatriptan).
Precautions and warnings: Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Eletriptan if: You have diabetes. You smoke or use nicotine replacement therapy. You are male and over 40 years old. You are female and postmenopausal. You or anyone in your family has coronary artery disease. You have been told you may be at higher risk of heart disease; discuss this with your doctor before using Eletriptan.
Recurrent use of migraine medicines: If you use Eletriptan frequently or any medicines for migraine over several days or weeks, it may cause a long-lasting daily headache. Tell your doctor if this happens, as you may need to stop treatment for a while.
Other medicines and Eletriptan: Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken or might take any other medicines. Taking Eletriptan with some medicines can cause serious side effects. Do not use Eletriptan if: You have taken ergotamine or medicines like ergotamine (including methysergide) within 24 hours before or after taking Eletriptan. You are taking any other medicines ending with "triptan" (for example, sumatriptan, rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, almotriptan, frovatriptan). Some medicines can affect how Eletriptan works, or Eletriptan itself may reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time. These include: antifungal medicines (like ketoconazole, itraconazole), antibiotics (like erythromycin, clarithromycin, josamycin), and HIV/AIDS medicines (like ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir). St. John’s Wort herbal supplement should not be taken at the same time as this medicine. If you are already taking St. John’s Wort, consult your doctor before stopping it.
Tell your doctor before starting treatment if you are taking some medicines (usually called SSRIs or SNRIs), for depression or other mental disorders. These medicines may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when used together with some migraine medicines (see section 4. Possible side effects).
How to use Eletriptan: Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Adults: You can take your medicine anytime after the start of a migraine, but it is best to take it as soon as possible. However, you should only take Eletriptan during the headache phase of the migraine. This medicine should not be used to prevent a migraine attack. The usual starting dose is one 40 mg tablet. Swallow each tablet whole with water. If the first tablet does not relieve the migraine, do not take a second tablet for the same attack. If the migraine eases after the first tablet but then returns, you may take another tablet. However, after the first tablet, wait at least two hours before taking the second. Do not take more than 80 mg (2 × 40 mg) in 24 hours. If you find that a 40 mg tablet does not relieve the migraine, tell your doctor — they may decide to increase the dose to two 40 mg tablets for future attacks.
Use in children and adolescents under 18 years: The use of Eletriptan tablets is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18.
Elderly: The use of Eletriptan tablets is not recommended for patients over 65 years old.
