Sukkari Mufattal

49

Product description

Caramel and honey, with a soft centre that melts like fudge.

Sukkari means “sugary” in Arabic, and it is the date Qassim, in central Saudi Arabia, is known for: about 65% of the palms in the region are Sukkari (Saudi Press Agency). Mufattal means “twisted”. As the date dries on the palm it twists on itself, which keeps the flesh soft inside a firm, golden skin. We sort our Sukkari by that twist.

Tasting notes

  • Flavour: caramel and honey
  • Sweetness: very sweet
  • Texture: soft and melting, inside a gently firm skin
  • Origin: Qassim, Saudi Arabia

How to enjoy it

The Saudi way: one date, then a sip of gahwa, a light Arabic coffee with cardamom. It is just as good with an espresso or a cup of black tea.

Storage

Keep in an airtight box in the fridge. Take the dates out about 30 minutes before eating: they taste best at room temperature.
