Tolstoy tells us that War and Peace is not a novel, nor is it a poem, but rather a literary record filled with excitement, love stories, lessons of history, and lessons learned. This novel, written by Tolstoy in 1869, which is considered the peak of his literary development, and some describe it as a novel contemplating history, presents to us how the love of life conflicts with wars and their tragedies. Tolstoy tells us that he wrote War and Peace to confirm that an incident in which millions of people are involved and half a million men are killed cannot be caused by the will of a single individual, that a man alone cannot force 500,000 people to die. Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was not only a writer but also a thinker, philosopher, and revolutionary. He wrote novels, stories, and plays, and delved into philosophy, establishing a philosophical school of his own, through which he sought answers to the question that always troubled him: "Why do we live?" All his works were attempts to answer this question. As part of its project to publish Tolstoy's complete works, Al-Mada publishes the full and faithful translation of Tolstoy’s timeless masterpiece "War and Peace," translated by the esteemed Sami Al-Droubi. However, fate did not allow him to complete it after finishing the first and second parts, so the work was completed by the distinguished translator Saih Al-Jahim, one of the most prominent Arab translators, who presented Tolstoy to the Arabic language in a pure, elegant style with a translation that matches the original text.
