Product description
In 1904, Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf received a letter from the Swedish National Teachers' Union stating that they were in urgent need of an engaging textbook that children would enjoy reading in classrooms, and that would stimulate their interest in the geography of their country so they could know it better and love it. They hoped the book would be interesting not only in geography but also in history and folk legends. Selma's response to the letter, which challenged her literary abilities and imagination, was that she would try. As a result of her attempt, the amazing adventures of Nils were published in 1907, revolving around a mischievous boy named Nils who hated animals and mistreated them. He was punished by a forest dwarf who transformed him into a tiny dwarf, prompting him to begin a journey among the animals in the forest after he was able to understand their speech, communicate with them, hear their opinions and ideas, and move freely everywhere. During these enjoyable adventures, he learned about the nature and geography of the land, Swedish folk legends, and everything a child can learn through these adventures. This novel became a creative work translated into more than 30 languages and marked a turning point in the life of this Swedish author, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1909 in recognition of her talents and efforts in literature and education.
