Jane Firthchild, a young woman working as a maid in one of the English countryside houses, meets her secret lover, Paul Sheringham, the noble young man belonging to the family living nearby. The meeting takes place on Mother’s Day, when the maids are sent out during the day to visit their mothers. The houses become empty of their residents then, as the nobles go to where they are served until the servants return at night. But Jane spends it with Paul, although he is about to marry a woman who meets the requirements of his social class and level, and the date of his wedding party has approached, and it seemed to her that this day was their last day together.
