Translation: Buthaina Al-IBRAHIMI This book presents a diagnosis of an important reason for bad behavior in public moral discourse. Much of our discourse is characterized by ugliness; because it involves moral display, meaning employing moral debate to market oneself. Do not misunderstand us, we see moral debate as a good thing. People must talk about justice, freedom, equality, and doing the right thing. But we need to do so in effective ways, not just to appear as good people, and this is what those who display moral virtue are very concerned with. The display is not linked to any particular political viewpoint; people with various opinions can, and should, agree on condemning display. It is not a phenomenon limited to partisans; rather, it is a human phenomenon. And if you are honest with yourself, you may remember times when you felt the need to display. What drives us to care if our moral talk earns praise from people with whom we hardly interact? And why are we willing to throw people under the bus to gain approval?
