The book was published along with her other Belarusian works that earned her the Nobel Prize in Literature, by Mamdouh Adwan Publishing House, translated by Nizar Oyoun Al-Soud, as part of distinguished political books.
About "Used Time"
Russia experienced several revolutions, disturbances, and bloody civil wars in the early twentieth century, resulting in the emergence of the Soviet Union, which formed a picture of the great empire that was invincible. Some saw it as the realization of the red socialist dream in building a superpower, with its influence extending over nearly half the world. Others viewed it as one of the harshest forms of oppressive totalitarian rule, with vast prisons and a difficult economic situation.
In 1991, the Soviet Empire collapsed rapidly after several revolutions, disturbances, and bloody civil wars. The red man woke up to find himself suddenly living in the ruins of an empire collapsing into dozens of conflicting states, witnessing a massive economic collapse and the end of the great dreams he had lived. Thus, the red man’s end.
In her book, Svetlana Alexievich does not seek answers to the big questions that concern the history reader, but rather thousands of small details of daily life passed by, through collecting dozens of testimonies from ordinary people who experienced this journey and its fluctuations. Svetlana searches for the small nighttime conversations that disappear with the morning, for the dream of a new future, of another time. But the time itself is repeated; used time.
