The court convened in its full sacred form in the Hall of Justice, with its high walls engraved with divine symbols, and its gilded ceiling, in which the dreams of humans soar. Osiris on his golden throne, to his right Isis on her throne, and to his left Horus on his throne, and at a short distance from his feet, Thoth, the scribe of the gods, sitting with his intertwined legs, holding the comprehensive book. "Naguib Mahfouz" expresses in this work the current of Egyptian nationalism with great brilliance; as he gathered all the rulers of Egypt from the Egyptians, from the era of "Mina" to the era of "Sadat," and also attributed Egyptian nationality to rulers who are not of pure Egyptian blood, but who are Egyptian in spirit, who gave their lives to this country, and made it their homeland, such as: "Ali Bey al-Kabir" and "Muhammad Ali Pasha." Perhaps his inspiration for the idea of the trial comes from the ancient Egyptian myth about justice in the life of resurrection and immortality, which consists of "Isis," "Osiris," and "Horus"; a clear reinforcement of this nationalism. The court began to prosecute each ruler and highlight the positives and negatives of his rule, and a long dialogue took place between the rulers, between supporters and opponents. Mahfouz was able through this work to present a panoramic image of Egypt's history across ages, emphasizing that evaluating the experience of governance is not an easy matter.
