In this novel called by the name of the café "Qashamar" in Al-Abbasiya, Naguib Mahfouz narrates about the relationship that gathered five friends from the neighborhood, two from Al-Abbasiya East where the wealthy of the past lived in the Saryat, and two from Al-Abbasiya West who are more modest, and the fifth is the narrator who represents Mahfouz in the opinion of many. Their class affiliations, their financial situations, and their ideological and political views vary, but they gather around friendship that unites them and carries them through the waves of time. Through this extended relationship, Mahfouz observes many of the transformations that Egyptian society witnessed during a period extending from World War I until the time of Sadat.
