The flower: • Tubular flowers grow in clusters, close to the shape of a spike, small in size, purple or violet in color, with white petals, and bloom for a long period. Uses and benefits: • Grown for decoration as it is a flowering plant with a fragrant scent. • Used as a flavor in Eastern and Western dishes. Despite its many benefits, basil seeds are rich in proteins, carbohydrates, essential fats, and contain a high amount of dietary fiber, thus offering tremendous health benefits. Suitable climatic conditions: • Choosing a sunny location is an important factor for basil, regardless of its variety. • It grows best in areas exposed to sunlight for 5-6 hours. • It adapts to relatively cold weather. Propagation method: • Propagated by seeds and cuttings. Planting time: • The best time to plant basil is in spring, with an optimal temperature of 15 - 28 degrees Celsius. • Germination begins approximately within 5-10 days. Suitable soil for planting: • It thrives in light, well-drained clay soil. • It grows in sandy soil with daily watering during summer. • The soil pH should be between 6 and 6.5, which is suitable for most vegetables. Planting method: • Ensure the frost wave has passed, as it could threaten basil seeds. • Then, sow the seeds directly into the soil at a uniform depth of about 0.6 cm each. • After five to seven days, the seeds will sprout. • Once the seedlings are thin and have three or four leaves, they should be separated with a distance of 25 to 35 cm. • Maintain soil moisture and keep it free of weeds. • Cover the soil with a layer about 5 to 8 cm thick, made of grass cuttings or straw. To keep basil longer: • Continue removing part of the flowers and ensure flowers are removed before they fully dry out.
