It is a genus of plants belonging to the leguminous family of the Fabales order, the most important species is the Vigna unguiculata known briefly as Cowpea, and this type is known as woody because its stem is upright and not sprawling on the ground like the Mung bean.
Uses and benefits:
• Used in food, especially in salads, soups, and main dishes.
And Cowpea is considered one of the most beneficial leafy vegetables for health.
Native habitat:
• Most parts of the African continent, parts of Asia, and it is widely cultivated in many Arab countries.
Suitable climatic conditions and soil for cultivation:
• Cowpea adapts well to winter in humid tropical areas and temperate regions.
• Cowpea thrives in a wide range of soils and living conditions, but it grows best in well-drained sandy loam or sandy soil.
Seeds should be planted at a sufficient depth so that there is no obstacle for the roots to extend into the soil, such as stones, planks, or wood; because cowpea seeds will be negatively affected if they encounter an obstacle or if soil and environmental conditions are unsuitable.
Cultivation method:
• Cowpea seeds are traditionally planted in rows, with spacing between rows ranging from 76 to 91 cm, and the distance between seeds about 5 to 10 cm.
Recently, commercial cultivation has adopted narrow rows, with spacing between 30.5 to 51 cm, and seed spacing from 2 to 4 cm.
It is important that the seeds are planted at a sufficient depth in the soil.
