🔬 3-Day Hands-On Workshop: CRISPR Gene Editing

Location: King Fahd Medical Research Center – King Abdulaziz University

Duration: 3 days

Overview:

A specialized workshop combining theory and practical training on CRISPR gene editing, organized by the Editome: Precision Gene Editing Research Unit in collaboration with Bio-Rad. Participants will gain hands-on experience using cutting-edge genome editing technologies and validation tools.

Target Audience:

• Postgraduate students (MSc and PhD)

• University students interested in molecular biology, biotechnology, or genetics

• Early-career researchers and laboratory staff

• Individuals who wish to apply CRISPR gene editing in their research but lack prior hands-on experience

Learning Method:

Lectures (theoretical) + Hands-on laboratory sessions + Interactive discussions

Registration Requirements:

Basic knowledge in molecular biology or genetics preferred.

Limited seats available.

Objectives:

• Introduce participants to the principles and mechanisms of CRISPR-Cas systems.

• Familiarize participants with vector types, selectable markers, and off-target considerations.

• Provide hands-on training in basic mammalian cell culture techniques.

• Train participants on practical workflows for CRISPR-based editing and validation.

• Highlight real-world applications of CRISPR in medicine, biotechnology, and diagnostics.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the molecular basis of CRISPR gene editing.

• Differentiate between CRISPR tools (Cas9, Cas12, Cas13, base/prime editors).

• Perform basic mammalian cell culture under aseptic conditions.

• Apply CRISPR constructs and understand selection strategies.

• Conduct validation assays using PCR and gel electrophoresis.

• Critically evaluate off-target effects and ethical considerations.

Additional Information:

• Workshop handbook provided.

• Validation session resources supported by Bio-Rad.

• Certificates of participation issued by Editome: Precision Gene Editing Research Unit and Bio-Rad.

• Practical skill test during lab sessions (cell culture handling, PCR, gel analysis).

• Participant feedback and reflection at the end of the workshop.
