Product description
The novel begins with a telegram from the nursing home to "Meursault" saying "Mother has died, the funeral tomorrow, best regards." The nursing home is located in (Marengo) at a distance of eighty kilometers from Algiers... From here, the events unfold with a display of indifference and a core of sarcasm. "Meursault / the narrator" delves into describing the elderly residents and the funeral. For "Meursault," there were no feelings at that moment except that he was smoking and drinking coffee with milk with the caretaker of the house... All of that faded in a moment of intense desire... bubbling with longing when he meets his girlfriend... who always talks to herself about him being eccentric, then we see "Meursault" going to the cinema to watch a comedy film after his mother's burial! "Meursault" commits a murder against an Arab person, until "Meursault" receives a death sentence, a sentence in which "Camus" closes his novel with the words of "Meursault": "On that starry night... I felt for the first time the sweetness and tenderness of indifference, and I felt that I was happy one day, and I still am until now. I wish everything would end, and I wish I were less alone here, and all that remains is to wish that there would be many spectators on the day of the execution, and that they would greet me with shouts of hatred and anger."
"Al-Gharib" was Camus's first novel, and it caused his fame. "It does not tell the story of a person estranged from his land, but it tells the story of 'Meursault,' the eccentric."
"Meursault" is a Frenchman living in Algeria, specifically in Oran, among many Europeans who occupy the entire city. "Al-Gharib" was a person who accepted his life as it was at all times, whatever it was. Meursault's only feature is his extreme honesty in expressing his feelings, so he never tried in any situation to express something he did not feel to appear normal in the eyes of others.
