Taro Hirai, also known as Edogawa Rampo, derived his name from the famous American writer Edgar Allan Poe, as well as his immense love for writing detective stories and investigations. This is clearly seen in his frequent mention of many of his stories and other Western detective works here and there. Rampo did not stop at loving Poe, translating his works, and reading foreign detective stories; he created one of the most famous and skilled Japanese detective characters himself, long before the appearance of Detective Conan. We are talking about Akishi Gōgōru, a character inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle's works and his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes. In these three stories, we will explore the beginnings of Gōgōru, who, before his fame as a handsome private detective and master of disguise, was a simple young man with messy hair, wearing traditional Japanese clothing, living in a room piled with investigation books, yet demonstrating astonishing skill in uncovering some strange, even supernatural, crimes at times, accompanied by his friend whose narration the book events are told through. In this work, we explore the early days of the young genius and how he solves some of the most difficult cases with remarkable ease and unique brilliance, bringing him face-to-face with the notorious Black Glove gang, launching us into one of the most exciting Japanese detective series ever.
