In telling the great writer Alawi Taha Al-Safi that funny story about Ali Al-Omir, he said: "Once we were in the city of Asmara in Eritrea, walking on our feet in one of its streets, when a huge sewage truck passed by, rushing wildly and almost hitting him, but God's will was for his safety, so he sat down in a squat, placing his hands on his head, as if he had been struck by a catastrophic disaster. I hurried to him, frightened, offering condolences, fearing he had been hurt!! When I found him safe, I wanted to tease him. Because of his love for innocent humor without any malice behind it. I said to him: Hey friend, did the truck scare you, you Qabili, from the tribe that sleeps and wakes up with weapons in peace and war? He responded with his sarcastic spirit: You reminded me of a history I carry on my shoulders, and it is a heavy history. I only feel sadness because I almost died a cheap death—not defending my homeland, nor for honor and dignity, which is a cheap and dishonorable death; it’s a sewage truck!!"
