Dandelion is a plant genus followed by more than 6 wild species, used in Egypt since ancient times, all parts of the plant, from leaves, roots, and flowers, are used as food and treatment for liver and digestive system diseases, and used in folk medicine to improve the digestive system, diabetes, jaundice, malaria, gallstones, and anemia. Its leaves are used as a substitute for spinach in some cultures. Dr. Samir Osman, Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at October 6 University, says: "It contains many substances used in modern medicines, such as Theophylline used to treat respiratory diseases, caffeine used as a stimulant, and flavonoids used as antioxidants. In a study published in 2011 under the supervision of the European Medicines Agency on 27 patients who used dandelion tea for a week, a noticeable improvement was found in the shape of red blood cells and blood viscosity, which helps reduce the risk of various clots. In another study published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Chinese Medicine in 2015, roasted root extract was tested on 47 diabetic patients for 4 weeks, and the study showed a significant improvement in the HbA1c level and increased insulin sensitivity."
