Summary: The first thing that a Muslim should pay attention to is everything that brings him closer to Allah the Almighty, and one of the best things that bring the servant closer to his Lord is understanding the religion of Allah, the Exalted. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever Allah intends good for, He grants him understanding of the religion."
Imam As-San'ani said: "In this hadith is a clear evidence of the nobility of understanding the religion and the scholars and those who seek knowledge in it, which is knowledge of the Book and the Sunnah."
Since ancient times and up to our present era, scholars and jurists have been engaged in researching and studying issues of knowledge to produce a solid, firm, and verified science. Among these is our Sheikh, the jurist and judge, His Eminence Sheikh Abdul-Muhsin bin Nasser Al-Obeikan, may Allah preserve him, the judicial inspector at the Ministry of Justice and former advisor at the Royal Court.
He has paid attention, may Allah preserve him, to research and investigation in various issues of knowledge, distinguished himself, and was guided by Allah in investigation and reasoning, especially with his comprehensive view of the objectives of legislation. He is—truly—not a blind follower of jurisprudence, but he strives according to what Allah shows him of the truth, guiding and explaining, responding and refuting opponents politely, in the manner of scholars.
His research is characterized by mentioning the choices of early and later scholars, the preferences of investigators, as well as precise deductions and reflections on subtle issues. He also mentions legal and foundational rules, and possesses a distinctive ability to extract rulings from them and apply them to contemporary issues.
These researches are also distinguished by being concise without neglect, covering all aspects of the issue, far from unnecessary filler that adds little benefit.
Let us leave the speech to our Sheikh, may Allah preserve him, who says: "When I saw many jurists, especially followers of the Imams, excessively deriving rulings from issues and delving into minute details based purely on independent reasoning far from the rule of analogy, this increased the distraction of scholars and students from focusing on important issues based on evidence. As I mentioned in the issue of (Ease of Sharia), I sought Allah’s help and began to select issues that people need most and to clarify rulings on them, making the most of valuable time and facilitating the preservation of important matters. I ask Allah for help, guidance, and understanding of the religion."
