Summary:
This booklet reviews the most important steps of fieldwork and the methods followed in collecting materials of folk heritage, especially oral sayings, from their oral sources, with a focus on collecting oral poetry, or what is called Nabati poetry. The field collection process is not limited to collecting texts only, but extends to other issues that should be given attention by the researcher. Recently, folklorists have begun to direct their interest towards the lives of narrators and storytellers and the social environment and civilizational conditions from which folkloric material emanates. The modern researcher can no longer ignore the social context from which narrators derive their material and the performative framework in which they move. The invasion of modern technological tools such as cameras and recording devices has had a radical impact on the development of field research methods.
