Summary: There is a need to understand the problematic nature of practices in order to go beyond teaching as a mere telling process, and by doing so, teaching immediately appears to be very difficult and complex. Although expert teachers may make teaching seem easy, the reality requires specialized skills, knowledge, and abilities. However, making these things clear to others so they know and understand them is not a simple task.
The first part of this book is designed as a gentle reminder of some basic functions and theories of teaching and learning, and aims to clarify how this work contributes to understanding what we do and our skills in managing teaching and learning; this is achieved by briefly combining some of these functions.
The second part builds on the foundations established in the first part and uses some (big picture concepts) in teaching and learning to clarify how knowledge of practice is formulated. It explains what professional knowledge looks like, and more importantly, how to translate this knowledge into practice through real-world examples from classrooms. These chapters highlight how professional knowledge goes beyond simplified concepts of using teaching procedures to break routine or perform enjoyable activities for students. It is about engaging students in learning in ways that create a genuine need for knowledge and a desire to accept greater responsibility to become active learners.
The third and final part of the book places the ideas from the previous two parts into the context of teachers' work. It challenges the concepts of professional development that are (usually viewed as telling teachers what to do), and focuses on the importance of professional learning by (supporting teachers in guiding the growth of their knowledge). This section is designed to create real opportunities for continuous development of teachers' specialized knowledge and skills.
