Synopsis: "The Singapore Story" is the first volume of Lee Kuan Yew's memoirs, the man who planted this island strongly on the world map. In an in-depth detail, "Lee" recounts the battles against colonizers, communists, and sectarians that led to Singapore's independence.
With full political skill, he confronted opponents, or used their help sometimes against others opposing him, in a sincere pursuit of Singapore's interests.
We read how he led striking trade unionists against the colonial government, and how he was able, while playing golf and drinking tea, to strengthen ties with prominent players in Britain and Malaya. We also see how, in midnight meetings in poorly lit rooms, he spoke with hiding communist leaders to reach an alliance with them to gain support from the Chinese-educated masses.
Readers will find inspiration through his vision as he fought for people's minds and hearts against communists first, then against sectarians in parliament, streets, and through the media.
Through his unpublished official papers, archives in Singapore, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, and his personal correspondence, he provides a vivid picture of how others viewed him: strict (Lee who may deceive and blackmail until the last moment), inciter (Chou Kan knew I was bleeding to control the Hokkin), ambitious (he might think himself free to be the leader of Malaya), and dangerous (Isaac Lee! Put him inside).
Sometimes it is a contradictory but harmonious image of this Asian statesman.
This book is not purely political: the author draws the reader into his world with an unusual frankness and a touch of humor.
We find amusing stories about important moments in his life: his childhood, his escape from Japanese massacres, his experience as a black market trader, his adventure in manufacturing local glue that led him to a permanent bond with Kuo Hock Choo.
He also exchanges opinions with men who shaped the era, such as Goh Keng Swee, S. Raghavan Ramanan, Toh Chin Chye, Hon Sui Sin, William Kim San, Diven Nair, William Chien Siong, Tunku Abdul Rahman, and Tun Abdul Raziq, Dr. Ismail Abdul Rahman, Syed Jafar Al-Bar, and British Prime Ministers: Harold Macmillan, Harold Wilson, and other prominent British leaders, Nehru, leader of India, Nasser, leader of Egypt, and Robert Menzies, leader of Australia.
Lee Kuan Yew was born in Singapore on September 16, 1923, from the third generation of Chinese immigrants from Guangdong Province.
He studied law at Cambridge University in England. In 1954, he formed the "People's Action Party." After five years, his party won the Singapore general elections, and he became Prime Minister at the age of thirty-five.
In November 1990, he assumed the position of Prime Minister.
