What is Pantoprazole and what is its use:
Pantoprazole is a medicine belonging to a class of drugs known as "proton pump inhibitors." It is used for short-term treatment of adult patients suffering from signs and symptoms of acid reflux, such as regurgitation and heartburn.
Do not take Pantoprazole:
• If you are allergic to Pantoprazole, or any other ingredients contained in this medicine. Tell your doctor about the symptoms you experienced.
• If you are taking protease inhibitors for HIV (medications used to treat HIV), such as Atazanavir and Nelfinavir.
Precautions and warnings:
• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have had allergic reactions to this medicine or have previously experienced allergic reactions to similar drugs (proton pump inhibitors). Signs of allergic reactions include shortness of breath, rash, swelling of the face or neck, low blood pressure, dizziness.
• Make sure to inform your doctor if you have liver problems, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), anemia, stomach or intestinal bleeding, unintended weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting or vomiting blood, or any other medical issue.
• Make sure to tell your doctor if you have had a stomach ulcer before or surgery in your stomach or intestines.
• Consult your doctor if you are undergoing ongoing treatment for heartburn or indigestion for 4 weeks or more.
• Make sure to inform your doctor if your symptoms are new or have recently changed and you are over 55 years old.
• Make sure to follow up regularly with your doctor if you are over 55 and taking over-the-counter antacids almost daily.
• Consult your doctor if you are going to undergo an endoscopy or a urea breath test before starting the medication.
• This medicine may not provide immediate relief after taking it. It is expected to start working after one day of treatment and up to 7 days for full relief.
• Do not take this medicine as a preventive measure for acid reflux.
• Do not take any other antacid medication with this medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
• This medicine may increase the risk of bacterial stomach or intestinal infections. Be sure to inform your doctor if you develop gastrointestinal symptoms such as severe, persistent diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
• This medicine may increase the risk of developing subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE), a skin disorder that usually develops in sun-exposed areas of the body, such as shoulders, upper back, neck, and arms, presenting as a red, prominent, scaly rash. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice side effects like rash or joint pain. Your doctor may stop the medication if this occurs.
• This medicine may interfere with some laboratory tests required during investigations of neuroendocrine tumors (tumors originating from hormones and the nervous system), so your doctor may advise stopping this medicine at least 5 days before testing if necessary. Be sure to inform your doctor if you are scheduled for a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).
• Usually, this medicine is used for up to 4 weeks unless your doctor recommends a longer duration.
• This medicine may affect your ability to absorb vitamin B12 if used for a long time.
• This medicine may increase the risk of fractures if taken at high doses and over long periods (more than one year). The risk is higher in elderly patients, those with osteoporosis (low bone density), and those taking corticosteroids. Your doctor may recommend calcium and vitamin D supplements based on your condition.
• This medicine may cause a decrease in magnesium levels if used for three months or more. Signs of low magnesium include involuntary muscle movements, fatigue, confusion, seizures, irregular heartbeat, dizziness. Contact your doctor if you experience any of these signs. Your doctor may measure magnesium levels before starting this medicine, especially if you are at higher risk of magnesium deficiency (such as long-term therapy or taking other medications with this medicine that may worsen magnesium deficiency). Low magnesium may also lead to low calcium or potassium levels in the blood.
• Make sure to inform your doctor if you do not feel better after two weeks of starting this medicine.
• Make sure to inform your doctor if you are taking this medicine for more than 4 weeks.
• Be sure to speak to your doctor immediately if you notice signs such as vomiting, especially if it is recurrent and bloody (dark coffee-ground appearance), pale skin, weakness, black or bloody stools, stomach pain, unintentional weight loss unrelated to exercise or diet, difficulty or pain when swallowing, chest pain.
• Your doctor may recommend some blood tests. Be sure to inform your doctor if you are currently taking this medicine before any blood test.
