About Thai basil: it is a type of basil native to Southeast Asia, cultivated for its distinctive features. Widely used throughout Southeast Asia, its flavor resembles anise - licorice - slightly spicy, with a more stable flavor when cooked at high temperatures or for a long time compared to sweet basil.
Thai basil remains green but is grown annually. As a tropical plant, Thai basil grows strongly in very warm climates where there is no chance of frost.
It can be cultivated from seeds or cuttings, requiring fertile, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight per day.
Flowers should be pinched off to prevent the leaves from becoming bitter.
Thai basil can be harvested repeatedly by taking a few leaves at a time, and should be harvested regularly to encourage regrowth.
Thai basil is widely used in Southeast Asian cuisines, including Thai, Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian dishes.
Thai basil leaves are a key ingredient in Thai green and red curries, although basil used in Thai noodles and many chicken and seafood dishes. However, these dishes in the West usually contain Thai basil instead, which is much more readily available than holy basil.
Thai basil is also an important ingredient in the popular Thai dish (Three Cups Chicken).
It is used as a spice, and fresh Thai basil leaves are often served as an accompaniment to many Vietnamese dishes.
