Following the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001, carrying any type of knife on airplanes became completely prohibited. In early 2013, the Transportation Security Administration announced a plan to change American security regulations and allow knives again on airplanes. Although the plan was later withdrawn, Spyderco already rose to the occasion by designing a high-performance non-locking pocket knife that complies with the proposed TSA guidelines. This knife is the Roadie. Essentially, the Roadie is a highly advanced, more practical, and easier-to-use knife than its historical predecessors. What sets it apart — "Double Dent™" — is a pair of symmetrical notches on the blade that provide great force to open it with the hands without the need to use nails. It is much better than traditional nail scratches, and it does not collect dirt or debris. Unlike traditional knives, the Roadie also features a precise finger hole that increases control during use and acts as protection against accidental closure. The commercial end of the Roadie knife is a sheep’s foot-shaped blade polished from Böhler-Uddeholm N690Co steel, a high-performance stainless steel alloyed with cobalt, molybdenum, and vanadium. The wide shape of the blade and the fully flat grind create an amazing edge geometry for a razor-sharp edge. The wide blade also provides ample space for the distinctive "Double Dent" feature, which allows easy opening of the blade with a pinch grip of the thumb and forefinger. Although not an opening feature, the Round Hole™ brand on the blade proudly designates the Roadie as a Spyderco product. Near the base of the blade, close to its intersection with the handle, there is a thin finger groove. Placing the finger on the groove provides excellent control over the edge and creates a natural "stop" to help prevent accidental closure. Both the groove and the corresponding thumb ramp on the blade spine feature tight grooves to enhance a positive non-slip grip. Unlike traditional slip joints, the Roadie blade is secured by an improved pivot mechanism. Its spring forms the full back strap of the handle, giving it structural strength and providing a foundation for the durable scales made from fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN). The injection-molded scales are designed for comfort and feature the Spyderco "bug" logo on both sides. They are also available in a wide variety of colors to suit all tastes.
