Saenchai Jupo: From the Mountains of Thailand to the Global Specialty Coffee Stage

The story of a Thai coffee producer redefining quality through innovation, heritage, and community

In the mountainous landscapes of northern Thailand, where coffee grows beneath forest canopies and among remote villages, Saenchai Jupo has emerged as one of the producers helping bring Thai specialty coffee to international attention.

Through Saenchai Estate, located in Galyani Vadhana, Chiang Mai, he combines generations of agricultural knowledge with innovative processing techniques, producing distinctive coffees recognized by specialty roasters and international competitions.

His achievements reflect a broader transformation in Thailand's coffee industry, where producers are increasingly focusing on quality, traceability, and unique sensory experiences.

Roots and Early Beginnings

Originally from Pangkhon in Chiang Rai, Saenchai was born into an Akha family with a long history of coffee cultivation.

His family has been involved in coffee farming for nearly two decades, and Saenchai has spent more than ten years helping improve cultivation, harvesting, and processing practices.

His connection to Galyani Vadhana grew through his wife's family, who were also involved in coffee production.

Together, they recognized the potential of the region's mountainous environment to produce exceptional Arabica coffee.

Saenchai Estate: A Farm Built Around Quality

Located in the highlands of Chiang Mai, Saenchai Estate benefits from cool temperatures, forest shade, and favorable conditions for slow coffee-cherry maturation.

The estate emphasizes careful cultivation, selective harvesting, and controlled post-harvest processing.

Rather than relying on a single production method, Saenchai continuously experiments with techniques that allow different characteristics of the coffee to emerge.

His processing experience includes washed, natural, honey, anaerobic fermentation, aerobic fermentation, and yeast-assisted fermentation.

These methods reflect his commitment to exploring the full potential of Thai-grown Arabica.

Preserving Thailand's Coffee Heritage

An important part of Saenchai's work involves identifying and preserving older coffee varieties growing in the region.

According to accounts of his work, some coffee trees in the area originated from varieties introduced during the 1960s.

Recognizing their potential, he began exploring ways to preserve and propagate these plants rather than allowing their genetic heritage to disappear.

His agricultural approach also emphasizes shade-grown cultivation, improved soil management, and reduced reliance on chemical inputs.

For Saenchai, developing exceptional coffee is closely connected to protecting the environment in which it grows.

Recognition and Competition Achievements

Saenchai's coffees have received recognition in Thailand's specialty coffee competitions over several years.

In competitions organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of Thailand (SCATH), his coffees achieved:

  • 2019: 9th place
  • 2020: 7th place
  • 2021: 7th place

His international recognition continued at Cup of Excellence Thailand 2025, where Saenchai Estate achieved third place with a score of 89.90 points.

The winning Bourbon coffee, processed using the natural method, attracted a final auction price of US$46.60 per pound, totaling approximately US$8,527.

The achievement highlighted both the quality of his production and the growing international interest in Thai specialty coffee.

Innovation Through Coffee Processing

Saenchai's approach to processing extends beyond conventional methods.

His experiments include controlled fermentation environments, different oxygen conditions, yeast cultures, and temperature management.

Some of his distinctive coffees have also involved coconut-water fermentation, demonstrating his willingness to explore unconventional approaches while pursuing desirable sensory characteristics.

These experiments allow the estate to develop coffees with diverse flavor profiles, ranging from clean and delicate expressions to intensely fruity and fermentation-driven cups.

Supporting Local Coffee Communities

Beyond his own estate, Saenchai actively shares agricultural knowledge with neighboring farmers.

His work includes introducing improved harvesting techniques, processing methods, and plantation management practices.

By demonstrating the commercial potential of higher-quality coffee, he contributes to renewed interest in coffee farming within local communities.

His experience illustrates how specialty coffee can create opportunities not only for individual producers but also for surrounding farming families.

A New Chapter for Thai Specialty Coffee

Thailand has traditionally received less international attention than established specialty coffee origins such as Ethiopia, Colombia, and Kenya.

However, producers such as Saenchai are helping change that perception.

International competitions, specialty auctions, and innovative processing methods are introducing Thai coffees to a wider audience of roasters and consumers.

Saenchai Estate represents this emerging identity: a combination of regional heritage, agricultural knowledge, environmental awareness, and experimentation.

From Origin to Cup

Saenchai Jupo's story demonstrates that exceptional coffee is not defined by origin alone.

It is shaped by the people who cultivate it, the decisions made during processing, and the willingness to improve with every harvest.

From the forests of Chiang Mai to specialty coffee roasters around the world, his work represents a growing movement of producers redefining what Thai coffee can achieve.
