Often one thinks that his mind will become dull if he cannot see the world and people from a new perspective. This phrase is used by Ivan Klema in his entry into the world of garbage on the basis that "respect is only earned by those who clean the world of human garbage: the police, judges, and investigators..."
The protagonist is a university professor working at an American university. He decides to return to his country (Prague) despite it being a poor country lacking freedom, "where I might be imprisoned or sent to Siberia," he expressed his feelings to his colleagues at the celebration held in his honor at the university before his return from America, trying to be cheerful like Americans, saying: "... and demonstrations in front of them with a sense of nationalism, or a kind of sense of duty, until I reached a convincing explanation. I told them that the people in my country know me, so even if I have to collect garbage from the streets, I will be in their eyes as I am, as I want to be, nothing else. I will be a writer. But here, I will remain one of those immigrants whom this great country pities..." When he returned to his country, he realized that he would not be more than just a person sweeping the streets, someone hardly noticed.
It can be said that this novel deals with individual alienation, whether inside or outside his country, delving deeply into the world of the marginalized, and opening up to urgent topics in today's world: unemployment in poor countries, lack of freedoms, the control of the supernatural over people's minds, street children, poverty, illness, and even heaven and hell and the world of spirits.
