Product description

The novel depicts the tragedy of an Egyptian middle-class family, whose balance is disrupted after the death of the father, who was the sole breadwinner. The story begins with the father's death, and everything else stems from it, as the mother and her four children (Hassan, Hussein, Hassanin, and Nafeesa) are forced to face poverty and harsh social pressures. Each family member tries to adapt to the new situation in their own way, leading to tragic results for each of them. The novel deeply explores many social and psychological issues: poverty: it shows how poverty can destroy families and push their members toward deviation. Class disparity: it highlights the conflict between social classes, and how ambitions can clash with a merciless social reality. Moral collapse: it demonstrates how harsh conditions can lead to the breakdown of values and principles. Human tragedy: the novel is a deep psychological study of its characters, showing how their tragic fates were an inevitable result of a mixture of personal weakness and social circumstances. "Beginning and End" is considered one of Naguib Mahfouz's most important works, showcasing his ability to analyze society and portray its tragedies with a highly impactful realistic style. The novel was adapted into a famous film directed by Salah Abu Soud in 1960.
