This book is a scientific attempt to critique many common perceptions about Islamic political thought, focusing on illustrating the diversity of Islamic political thought. The book titled "Islam and Politics in the Medieval Era" by Dr. Makram Abbas focuses on demonstrating the diversity of Islamic political thought, as reflected in our cultural heritage, and how it interacted with societal developments throughout history. The book is distinguished by a clear academic feature and a methodological stance that goes beyond simple summaries, delving into the details of Islamic political thought in the medieval era. That thought produced—according to the author—three ways of understanding politics: the first way is evident in the writings of the authors of "Sultanic Literature," which focus on the values of governance and its need for wisdom and learning from political experiences, whether those that occurred within the Islamic historical context or those derived from outside (Persians, Romans, Indians). The second way is the way of the jurists, whom the author criticizes for being preoccupied with the issue of sedition and for overemphasizing the priority of security. The third way is that of the philosophers (Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina), which considers political matters from the perspective of natural law and aims to achieve human perfection, inspired by the scientific and philosophical culture prevalent in their time. After analyzing models of these three methodological approaches, the author reaches important conclusions.
