The total collection of poems is 154, divided into three sections. The first section, from poems 1 - 17, in which the poet urges his dear friend to marry so that he may have a son who will perpetuate the beauty and noble morals of the father in the world. The second section includes poems 18 - 126, which are about love and the beauty of the beloved. The third section includes poems 127 - 152, which talk about the dark-skinned mistress, whom he sometimes describes as black in appearance and character, a matter that some researchers see as an expression of intense hatred towards women in general. Then follow poems 153 and 154, which are inspired by two Greek poems, in a reflection of the state of true love.
