The eloquence of Sufi messages A collective thesis submitted by its author on November 4, 2010, to obtain a doctorate in Arabic language and its performance (Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences in Tetouan, Morocco) under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Mashbal. The thesis originally focused on (Sufi messages: their intellectual foundations and artistic characteristics); however, research conditions, requirements, and stakes quickly led the researcher — under the guidance of the supervisor — to explore the eloquence of Sufi messages as written by a prominent figure among them, Ibn Arabi. Ibn Arabi’s Sufi messages are based on a set of components and features that made them a unique literary genre in terms of language, subject matter, and purpose. It is the literary genre that Ibn Arabi believed in its effectiveness, utility, and ability to facilitate communication with the recipient and influence them. This means that Ibn Arabi did not write or direct those messages to others solely for communicative purposes, but also in response to his artistic convictions and aesthetic and intellectual choices. Therefore, the researcher aimed to uncover the structures of Ibn Arabi’s Sufi messages, their rhetorical units, and to observe their types and objectives, while approaching the grandeur of their subject and the beauty of their eloquence.
