Product description

The novel "The White Guard" deals with a complex and highly intricate historical period. In 1917, the Bolshevik Revolution erupts in Russia, the ruling family is arrested, and all its members are executed. This occurs while Tsarist Russia is participating in World War I, and the Bolsheviks encourage soldiers to rebel, return from the war, and declare disobedience. Events develop until Russia withdraws from World War I and the Civil War begins between the White Guard forces and the Bolsheviks. During the same period, a popular independence movement erupts in Ukraine to separate from Tsarist Russia, in addition to German forces in Ukraine supposedly supporting the White Guard forces loyal to Tsarist Russia, while the Bolsheviks support peasant rebellions. News arrives that Petliura, a leader of the Ukrainian independence movement, is approaching the city to tighten his grip on it. We are facing several armies fighting over Ukrainian land in highly complicated historical circumstances, with loyalties shifting very quickly amid a terrifying chaos and complete lack of information. These are some features of this pivotal period. Bulgakov wrote this novel between 1923 and 1924, and its first parts were published in 1925 in the magazine "Russia," with the full work published for the first time in France between 1927 and 1929. The author began writing his novel only five years after the outbreak of the events, yet he was able to create a remarkable literary work, personally regarded as one of the landmarks of Russian literature in the first half of the twentieth century. Its importance lies in both its form and content, as Bulgakov excelled in understanding his characters and their fates, as well as the fate of his entire homeland. He presented his literary masterpiece in a literary form that exudes freshness, vitality, and innovation. Translated from Russian. 13*20 cm 472 pages
