My beloved is mute
When we finish reading "My beloved is mute"
We do not tire ourselves much in classifying this work
And whether it is a novel or a long letter that revives past memories.
In truth, the title bears both meanings,
As the narrator writes a shared novel with himself,
Sneaking into the reader's consciousness gently,
And leading him to live a story of incomplete love,
Trembling words,
And meanings dancing to its tunes,
Meanings of loss,
Written by a lover,
Wanting to reveal his secret willingly,
As he narrates his love story for a mute girl,
Who distanced herself after society rejected her.
He says: "My sadness deepens every time I remember that our entire society stood against us, shouting 'It’s not appropriate for a healthy man to be with a deficient woman,'
As if setting standards for love that we should not violate to earn their blessings for this love...
It saddens me that a woman like you, full of beauty and good qualities,
Does not have many opportunities to live as she wishes and with whom she wishes,
And is forced to be for those who resemble her...
They have wronged us, my beloved,
They kept us apart with a clause 'not suitable' or 'not appropriate,'
And ignored that together we can overcome the obstacle of voice,
To be your voice, and you be my silence..."
In this work, (Al-Salem) uses the letter technique in most of his texts,
Where the story is crafted using the letter technique based on the dialectic of the speaker/addressee.
The speaker is Hattan/the narrator, present directly in the text,
And the addressee is Hanin, the mute girl,
Present indirectly through the narrator,
Making the text a long letter, multiple parts, addressed to a specific/absent person.
Thus, the language of metaphor is present,
And the delicate poetic images that enrich its aesthetic dimension,
And the narration is sweetened with the water of poetry.
