This medication is a combined oral contraceptive method and belongs to a group of drugs commonly called "birth control pills." It contains two types of hormones: an estrogen hormone called ethinyl estradiol and a progestin called gestodene. These hormones prevent the ovary from releasing an egg each month (ovulation). They also increase the density of the fluid (mucus) in the cervix, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and change the lining of the uterus to reduce the likelihood of accepting a fertilized egg. Medical research and extensive experience have shown that birth control pills, if taken correctly, are an effective and reversible form of contraception, and this medication, like other hormonal contraceptives, will not protect you from HIV (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases. Only a condom can do that.
