Ibn al-Jawzi explained the reason for writing this book, which was that he often encountered many thoughts that occupied him and distracted him, so they would go away. It was important to preserve what comes to his mind so he would not forget, and this is what he did in this book, as it is simply a window into what is going on in his mind, and his analysis of those around him and his perspectives on them. He included some of his ideas and what he contemplated about the human soul through his personal experiences in life. These ideas came in a wonderful way, at the height of eloquence, to convey the essence of his experiences. It also contains many religious reflections, trying to repair what we think has been broken in our relationship with God, healing us from within ourselves. A beautiful book, light on the soul, suitable for every era, and comforting for every spirit.
