The Black Butterflies novel depicts the events of the first year of the Sarajevo siege from the perspective of the artist Zora Kucovic, who recounts what she faced and endured with other besieged people—pain, terror, shock, hunger, and cold. At the same time, it highlights the few moments of happiness that reveal themselves amid the flood of tragedies accompanying wars. An inspiring novel about the power of art, love, and hope, and about the resilience of the will to live in the face of barbaric attacks on a historic city of diverse ethnicities, religions, and cultures. In The Black Butterflies, we learn about the history of the city, the culture of its people, the brutality of war, the nobility of love, and the strength of friendship.
