Synopsis of the novel:
The events of the novel revolve around a successful lawyer named Mr. Saleh. The novel opens with his character sending a letter to his wife from inside prison, saying "I did not kill Leila Hayek," then the events go back to show how it developed until reaching this point. The story begins with Mr. Saleh going out to dinner with his wife at a restaurant to celebrate her birthday before continuing the celebration at a nightclub.
Mr. Saleh's wife, Dima, meets her friend Leila Hayek at the nightclub, who is accompanied by her husband, Saeed Hayek. This meeting was the beginning of a romantic relationship between Mr. Saleh and his wife's friend. The events start to accelerate from this point until they reach the time of the crime and investigation.
Ghassan Kanafani allows the reader to make a judgment after being provided with evidence that incriminates Mr. Saleh and also exonerates him, making the reader part of the novel instead of the traditional role of an observer.
Although this novel differs from Ghassan Kanafani's other works, he depicts a familiar social reality.
