The story is based on real historical events that took place in Greece, from the earthquake of 1926 and the events that followed, up to World War II and how this war affected this forgotten island. Sophia's secrets is a novel that deals with love, shyness, pain, and heartbreak. It draws us from the beginning to explore a dark past revealed by Uncle George to his niece Olivia after their return to their hometown Castelorizo on a journey to scatter their mother and grandmother's ashes. Secrets of the family division are gradually revealed while Olivia is there, despite Uncle George's suffering in exposing his family's past, he is completely convinced that Olivia has the right to know. George, during his conversation with Olivia, says words that almost summarize the reason for the estrangement of the sisters and the family: "Sophia's dreams and wishes are what led to the division of the family in the end. Maria wanted to keep her husband at any cost, believing he would stop living after seeing her severely disfigured by the fire, but she was wrong, and that was her big mistake. Then there was Sophia, who placed her trust in superstitions and myths when she should have trusted Mother Nature and the good sense to care for things." The novel also includes romance, with sailor Mustafa and Maria, soldier Jimmy and Sophia, who met in a strange way and married under difficult circumstances.
