Product description
The novel Nostromo was published in 1904 and its events take place in a fictional republic in South America called "Costaguana." In 1998, the novel Nostromo ranked 47th among the hundred best novels written in English in the twentieth century. Francis Scott Fitzgerald said: "I wish I had written Nostromo instead of any other novel." In 1917, Conrad wrote an introduction to the novel, in which he referred to Nostromo as "the son of the people," the man who attends anarchists' meetings, listens to their speeches, and dreams of coming revolutions without doubt. In the novel, the American millionaire mining pioneer Holroyd says: "We will conduct business in the world whether the world likes it or not." In 1857, Joseph Conrad was born in one of the cities located within the borders of Ukraine, and his father was a national poet, expelled by the Tsarist authorities. After his father died, his mother followed him, and Conrad moved to live with his uncle, then left for Poland, then to Marseille, to begin a life at sea, which formed the background of most of his later literary works. When he died in 1924, newspapers published his obituary as "the best foreigner who wrote in English," which he continued to speak with a clear foreign accent until the last years of his life.
