My God, my God, why have you forsaken me, far from my salvation... During the day I pray but you do not answer, at night I pray but I have no peace... Our fathers relied on you. They trusted and you saved them... They relied on you and were not disappointed. But I am a worm and not a man. A disgrace among people and despised by the nation. All who see me mock me... Because you drew me from the womb. You made me trust on my mother's breasts... Do not be far from me, for distress is near, because there is no helper... All dogs have surrounded me. A company of evil ones encircled me... They look and stare at me. They divide my garments among them, and cast lots for my clothing... Save my life from the sword, my only one, from the hand of the dog... I will praise you in the midst of the congregation. Oh you who fear the Lord, praise him... For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, nor has he hidden his face from him, but when he cried to him, he heard.
Old Testament, Psalms of David, Psalm 22
O God, I cry out to you about my weakness and my lack of strength and my shame before people. O most merciful of the merciful, you are the Lord of the oppressed, and you are my Lord; to whom shall I turn: to someone far away who persecutes me? Or to an enemy who has taken my affairs into his hands? If it is not your wrath upon me, I do not care, but your mercy is wider for me. I seek refuge in the light of your face, to which darkness has shone, and upon which the affairs of this world and the Hereafter are set right; lest your anger descend upon me, or your wrath fall upon me; to you belongs praise until you are pleased, and there is no power or strength except with you.
