This book includes Franz Kafka's famous novel "In the Penal Colony" and his controversial short story: "The Hounds" and "Arabkan." The officer directs the explorer who arrived on the mysterious island to examine the hellish torture machine in Franz Kafka's novella "In the Penal Colony." The officer in this strange novella was the last of the sadists and clings to his device, which the new commander condemns, trying to abolish its brutal punishment, where the condemned is laid face down in its lower part, while the upper part moves to carve the victim's back with needles until death, then throws the body into the pit filled with blood beneath the machine. The author, who wrote his works at the beginning of the twentieth century and left them as a secret testament and prophecy of the repression that would occur in a bleak century filled with war and ideology, advanced the events of his story until the victim, in the last moment, made the desperate officer lie inside his device to be its last victim and buried alongside his founder commander. And the story does not end with this comforting ending, because Kafka did not forget to warn us with an inscription engraved on the tomb of the torture pioneer, foretelling that he will return after a certain number of years to lead his followers to reclaim the colony!
