"Home Wedding Parties" is the first novel of a trilogy written by the great Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, and it represents the pinnacle of his literary maturity, and one of his most personal and poetic works. The novel tells the story from the perspective of Ilishka, or as she will be known later, Pepsi, the young woman who arrives in Prague from Slovakia after her family’s collapse. She finds work in the kitchen of the Paris Hotel, and explores the big city with her free spirit. During a visit to former friends (who are actually Hrabal’s neighbors), Pepsi receives a cold reception, so she decides instead to visit Dr. Hrabal, who lives in a unique house — a house where the heating is never turned off throughout the year, and strange eccentric characters frequent it. Gradually, the quiet house transforms into a stage for lively parties and literary and intellectual evenings, which Hrabal calls "wedding parties," as a metaphor for celebrating life amidst chaos. The novel is not just a love story, but a panoramic scene of the cultural life in Prague, of passion and alienation, and of art when it dwells in ordinary houses. With his known style of flow, richness, and capturing daily details with a satirical and loving eye, Hrabal offers a highly personal literary work, where personal biography intersects with collective memory. "Home Wedding Parties" is an entry point into Hrabal’s world, his relationship with his wife, his life among people, words, and music.
