The translator Hamid Lishahb focused his attention in choosing the texts he translated for Eric Fromm in this book on critical texts, especially those that analyze the manufactured society and consumer culture linked to the liberal capitalist system, in order to understand the flaws identified by Fromm and to learn about the solutions he proposed. His interest was also directed toward understanding his view of religion and the existential issues resulting from the almost complete exclusion in manufactured societies of this spiritual foundation of humans, and the consequences of that on the mental health of this human. It should be noted in this context that Fromm did not mention Islam in any of his works in any negative way, unlike many Western thinkers, but remained loyal to his principle of committing to writings on topics he knew sufficiently, as is the case with Judaism and Christianity. These texts were also enriched with Fromm's ideas related to humanism and his unconditional defense of this tendency, attempting to demonstrate Western centrality, which he critically addressed, warning that it leads to arrogance and narcissism that do not serve humanity in any way, but rather lead it to the horrors of wars and economic and political conflicts.
