The translator Amr Zakaria Abdullah says about the edition: that writing the history of slavery is writing the history of contempt.. There is no doubt that slavery is the symbolic equivalent of killing.. As the book "History of slavery from ancient times to the present" Histoire de l’esclavage De l’Antiquité à nos jours‎ is an exciting attempt to deeply explore the phenomenon of slavery, which played an important role no less in its importance than political and economic history throughout history and across different civilizations and eras for nearly five thousand years or, more precisely, since three thousand years ago, that is, since the invention of writing, which provided us with tangible evidence of the existence of the system of enslavement. And strangely, the system of slavery did not trouble the human conscience except in Europe from the second half of the eighteenth century onwards, as is evident through the chapters and pages of this book; condemnation began to be issued hesitantly from that time, making European Enlightenment and its call for freedom seem false and superficial to awareness. It is worth noting that the slave trade did not stop at the end of the nineteenth century, even though it had begun to decline, and this was not due to the awakening of the European conscience in particular or the human conscience in general, but because it was no longer a profitable trade, and thus its abolition was legally enacted in most Western countries. However, the issuance of the "Abolition of Slavery" law did not prevent the slave trade from continuing its activities secretly, but in new forms that differ fundamentally from what was prevalent and known throughout history.
