Because the personality of Ibn Hazm and his writings have fascinated many Arab and non-Arab researchers, in the West and the Islamic East, in all ages, as well as attracting the attention of many orientalists and Arabists who have engaged with his writings since the late nineteenth century. His Zahiri school of thought also sparked wide controversy and debate; many jurists and scholars from the East and West have delved into it; they divided into supporters and opponents, haters and deniers, defenders, students, commentators, and analysts. The Spanish Arabists of course paid him great attention, but we do not know of any other European orientalists or Arabists who received such high regard and dedicated a large part of their lives to him as Plathius did; he studied Ibn Hazm's life in detail and accuracy, and delved into his scientific, jurisprudential, literary, and historical heritage. According to Plathius's view, Ibn Hazm was the first historian of religious ideas; through his book "Al-Fasl fi al-Milal wa al-Ahwa' wa al-Nihal."
