Often it appears to me the Dolphin Hotel in my dreams, and in these dreams I find myself there stuck in some continuous events, everything around me says that I am part of this ongoing dream. And the Dolphin Hotel is a hotel that is out of the ordinary because of its very narrowness that makes it seem like a long bridge, but it is a covered bridge, a bridge that extends in time to infinity, and there I find myself inside it, but there is another person also crying. I always find the hotel surrounding me from all sides, I feel its pulses and its heat, and in my dreams I find myself part of it, I wake up from my sleep, but where am I? I don't even think about that, I already asked myself that question: "Where am I?" as if I didn't know: I exist, in my life, and my existence is a manifestation of the world, I do not recall even once that I agreed to these matters or this situation or this set of events in which I appear, maybe there is a woman sleeping next to me, but most of the time I find myself alone, there is nothing but me and the highway that runs directly alongside my apartment and a glass (which still has five millimeters of whiskey in it) and the dusty morning light, sometimes the weather is rainy. The Dolphin Hotel is a real hotel and it actually exists in a neighborhood of Sapporo, I spent a week there several years ago, or rather let me be precise, how many years ago was that? Four years, and to be more accurate, four and a half years. I was still in my twenties then, when I checked into the Dolphin Hotel with a woman I was living with, and she was the one who chose the place when she said, "This is the place where we will stay," and if it weren't for her, I would never have set foot in such a place. It was a small, ugly hotel, and during all the time we spent there, I don't know if we saw any other guests. There were some keys missing from the board behind the reception desk, which makes me suspect that there were other guests there... It is a hotel surrounded by mystery from all sides, reminds me of biological death, and genetic setback, it is a strange creation of nature that cast a creature onto the wrong path without any way to return... But we stayed there, and I remember she said, "This is the place where we will stay," but she disappeared afterward, she appeared then vanished. It was the masked one who told me that when he said: the woman left alone after the afternoon, somehow the masked man knew that, he knew she had to leave, just as I know now. Her goal was to take me there, as if that was her destiny, like the Volta Fava river flowing toward its mouth in the sea, and like rain falling to the earth; when these dreams began to haunt me about the Dolphin Hotel, she was the first thing that came to my mind, she was searching for me, otherwise why does the same dream appear to me again and again?... Between fantasy that expresses virtual reality, and real life lived, Murakami walks in this novel. It is the life of modern capitalist society, the life of seeking friendship, love, food, and growing consumer needs, and also the life of individuality, fragmentation, and isolation, the life of the parents of Hakone: the mother, a professional photographer, a famous artist, leaves her daughter alone, concerned with traveling to filming locations... and her lovers... and a wealthy father living in another world, happy to find someone who cares about his daughter, giving her not only what she wants but what she might desire. In the background of this novel, there is always the masked man, the owner of wisdom and keeper of the history of human transformations, this man repeats to the protagonist: you must dance... dance... expressing the pattern of contemporary life.
