The elite of 19th-century Morocco did not produce thinkers and reformers like their counterparts in the Mashriq such as Khair al-Din Pasha, Rifa'a al-Tahtawi, and Ahmad Fars al-Shidyaq, and their culture remained very limited and superficial in comparison to these. There is a vast gap between what Moroccans wrote about issues of modernization and reform and what was written in Egypt, Tunisia, and the Ottoman states. Therefore, Muhammad al-Mushrifi is an exception among Moroccan writers and journalists during the 19th century. He had read Khair al-Din al-Tunisi's book "Aqwam al-Masalik" and drew much inspiration from his ideas, which is why in his book "The Gift of the Imam and the Advice of Islam," he is deeply influenced by the reformist Eastern thought. We also see in him the seeds of an open awareness that far exceeded many of his peers, especially when he calls for adopting Europe and following its example, in accordance with what Khair al-Din al-Tunisi outlined in his book.
